If you’re looking for a new place to go, you might want to consider Lake Maggiore in Switzerland’s south. It’s quieter than it’s more famous Italian neighbour Lake Como, but just as pretty.
This picturesque region, where Italian is spoken is where the mountains meet the lake. We stayed in Casa Dono, a private apartment and enjoyed its authenticity and its location in the hillside village of Piodina.
The stylish decor is made up of a collection of traditional and modern furniture that makes the space feel warm and homely. The owners have an eye for detail and have chosen the furnishings well. Authentic, charming and comfortable, nothing has been overlooked.
The closest town of Brissago on the lake has a few cafes, restaurants, a small supermarket as well as a ferry and bus station. It’s a good place to grab some essentials, enjoy a morning coffee and stock up at the local bakery.
We loved walking down to the lake via the intimate passageways that zigzag between the houses. We also found a track that winds down the side of the valley through the forest that’s beautiful in the early morning. You can walk across the hillside to the next enclave, where there is a small hotel with a sunny terrace overlooking the lake.
Casa Dono is a twelve-minute drive over the border to Cannobio, its nearest Italian neighbour. We enjoyed dinner on the promenade a few times and visited the Sunday market. And a word of warning, when the market is on, Cannobio can be a very busy place! There are numerous lakeside towns, all with their unique charm, right around the lake to the resort town of Stresa.
