We’re at the Hotel Punta Est in Finale Ligure, a coastal town between the mountains and sea. Situated between the port of Genoa and the French border, and an easy drive from Milan or Turin. In the warmer months in this part of Italy, you will find generations of Italian families enjoying summer vacations together.
Framed by ancient pine trees, the view over the Mediterranean from Hotel Punta Est’s terraces is a major draw-card. The old world charm of the hotel is quintessentially Italian, and it’s terraces, swimming pool and gardens make it a classic, sophisicated place to stay.
The hotel’s garden is very beautiful with ancient pine trees, palms and exotic plants. The steep driveway winds its way up to the main building complete with terraced gardens, terracotta pots and intimate sitting areas.
Breakfast is served al fresco on the terrace and is a gorgeous place to sit and plan the day ahead over coffee and pastries.
Liguria’s natural beauty and warm weather is a drawcard for summer vacations. Italian’s really know how to relax and enjoy themselves and we caught on quickly, enjoying the many beaches or private beach clubs.
Our holiday was spent at the beach, swimming and enjoying fresh seafood and pasta at the beach clubs café’s. Ot just lying around on a sun lounge reading and snoozing. Walking into the old town is easy too and we often did that in the morning for coffee and shopping or the evening for dinner.
The Italian Riveria is a narrow area land area that is squeezed between the sea and the mountains. The pretty coastline is greatly contrasted by the limestone cliffs and wild beauty of the regions mountainous terrain.
Known for its clean beaches, palm lined promenades and fishing villages, the Italian Riveria is in easy reach from the major cities of Milan, Turin and Florence. And there are plenty of cafe’s and restaurants to hang about in, if you get sick of the beach!
The region of Liguria produces some of the best olive oil and basil pesto in the world. Blessed with a micro-climate and plenty of sunshine that allows for it citrus trees to thrive in winter.
Ligurian cuisine is based on local seafood. Other regional specialities are trofie pasta with pesto, focaccia, farina – a kind of pancake made with chickpea flour and also panissa, a chunky chickpea flour French fry.
Our local tip
Make Finale Ligure your base and take day trips to villages along to coast like Laiguéglia or Imperia. Remember to stop frequently to enjoy the coastal scenery and sample some of the local food.
